Ambassador Jamal Al-Sallal has a Master’s in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University and a B.Sc. in Commerce and Economics from Ain Shams University in Cairo. He has devoted his life as a career diplomat to the Republic of Yemen.
The appointment as Ambassador of the Republic of Yemen to Canada in November 2016, brings him full circle as, in his first posting in 1986 to 1991; he was responsible for YemeniCanadian affairs at the Yemen Embassy in Washington, DC.
From 1994 – 1998, he was Deputy to the Ambassador at the Arab League, based in Cairo. He then returned to Sana’a and from 1998 – 2000 was a member of the Arabic Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and then from 2000 – 2004 was Director for North American and Canadian Affairs assuming the additional responsibility of Vice-chairman of the Department of North and South America from 2002 to 2004.
In 2004, he became Consul-General to Mumbai, India and a year later in 2005, Consul-General for Dubai and the Northern Emirates (UAE). He was Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran; and non-resident Ambassador to Azerbaijan from 2006 – 2011. During the years 2011 – 2014 he was Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, following which he was appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Yemen.
Over the course of his career, he has Chaired and participated in many international and regional Conferences. He has also presented numerous research papers on economic development and strategic and foreign policy issues.
Ambassador Al-Sallal speaks fluent Arabic and English and is married with three children.
